12/18/06 Lesson Plan.

First and foremost, Happy Holidays to you and yours!

This week we're going to be delving into an area which is often overlooked by Jiu-Jitsu instructors and students alike, that area is the art of the Takedown. So, without further delay here's the plan:

Techniques/Drills:

Judo Stance and Gripping
Basic Judo Throw
Defending the Throw
Wrestling Stance and Tie Ups
Basic Double Leg Takedown
Defending the Double Leg

As you have no doubt noticed, this week's lesson plan is a little more lengthily than the previous plans. This is due to the fact that Judo and Wrestling are incredibly in depth, and it takes years to develop a good takedown game. We will barely be scratching the surface this week, but in doing so we will create a solid foundation to build upon in the future.

12/12/06 Lesson Plan.

Our main focus this week is on escaping the mount position. When your opponent has you trapped in the mount position the first step towards escaping is to relax and maintain your breathing. It's also very important to keep your elbows in close to your ribcage and your hands in a position where you can protect your neck. Also, we need to make sure to always keep at least one of our feet on the floor, ideally both feet are used for optimal bridging to off balance our opponent. I've listed the techniques we will be focusing on below:

Techniques/Drills:

  • Basic Hip/Elbow Escape variation
  • Defeating the Leg Grapevine
  • Escaping the High Mount

You'll notice that this week I have not included any descriptions with the techniques listed. The reason for this change is because I feel that it is important for you to document these techniques in your own words. This can easily be accomplished by keeping a journal, either in a notebook or by starting your own online blog. I would encourage you to start your own blog and make sure that you send me the link so I can read about your progress!

12/5/06 Lesson Plan.

This week we're working on some very effective methods of preventing our opponent from passing our guard.

Techniques/Drills:

  • Cupping outside of leg and hitching a ride.
  • Placing top knee inside to make space.
  • Open guard pass prevention (Shin across stomach, leg on side of head).

Hopefully these descriptions will make sense after you've practiced these in class!

Lesson Plan and Training Journal.

Team,

I plan on using this blog/journal as something you can refer to and keep track of what techniques we are working on each week. This way you will be able to look back and have a reference as to what you've worked on over the days/months/years. I would also encourage you to start your own journal for personal review, you'd be surprised at how much it can help with technique retention.
