11/13/07 Lesson Plan

Wow,

Have I been slacking off! I appologize for not making the time to post on here since back when the new facility opened in July. I will be back to regularly posting on here starting now! This week we're working on defeating what I call the "Wrestler Posture". This is when someone is in your closed guard, leaned over at the waist resting their head on your sternum, usually with either biceps control or with their forearms clamped tight to your hips. Any of you who have been in this situation know what a pain it can be to counter. So, without further delay....

Techniques/Drills:

  • Bridge to feet on hips control
  • Head push to feet on hips control
  • Underhook to feet on hips control
  • Triangle from hip control

Takedowns Class:

  • Modified fireman's carry from overhook

3/19/07 Lesson Plan

This week we'll be talking about combos. When we think of combos (other than a quick fast food thought) we often think about the punching combinations we see in Boxing or Muay Thai. Combos are equally important in Jiu-Jitsu. So, with that in mind, here's this week's lesson plan.

Techniques/Drills:

  • Offensive Combo Sequence
  • Defensive Combo Sequence

Hopefully these will add something to your game!

2/19/07 Lesson Plan

So,

I've been keeping a watchful eye out as to what the majority of you guys are having trouble with, and I've come up with this week's lesson plan. This week.... Wait for it...... Mount escapes!

Techniques/Drills:

  • Mount escape basics (hip movement, arm placement, etc)
  • Basic escape to full guard
  • Basic escape to open guard

That should be enough to keep us busy all week!

Coach

P.S. Yes I do realize that we worked on mount escape related techniques back in December! Why are we working on them again? We only scratched the surface last time, and the main reason is that many of you are still making some BIG mistakes :)

2/12/07 Lesson Plan

This weeks lesson plan is......... Triangle choke setups and defense!

Techniques/Drills:

  • Triangle setup #1 (knee contour)
  • Triangle prevention (posture)
  • Triangle defense (moving towards trapped arm)

Each of these will bring up other details which we will go over and expand upon.

2/5/07 Lesson Plan

Earlier on today I was scratching my head trying to figure out what we should work on this week. After a few moments, it hit me like a ton of bricks! Many of you have been complaining about not being able to pass the Spider Guard. For those who don't know, Spider Guard is a form of open guard in which your opponent has one or both feet pushing on your biceps, while maintaining control of one or both of your sleeves. So, by popular demand, this week we will be covering how to go about passing the Spider Guard!

Techniques/Drills:

  • Elbow Swim Pass (inside of knee grip)
  • Stack Pass (under leg grip)
  • Spin Pass (Opponent is pushing up further with one leg than the other)

I will do my best to make sure that we're able to work on all of these throughout the week!

Coach

1/29/07 Lesson Plan

Ok,

So those of you who regularly check this blog will have noticed that I edited last week's lesson plan. We simply ran out of time and were only able to go over the straight ankle lock and a couple of counters. This week we will finally delve into some kneebar setups and defenses!

Techniques/Drills:

  • Kneebar setup
  • Kneebar preventative defense
  • Kneebar late defense

Coach

1/23/07 Lesson Plan

Ok,

I'm happy to say that I didn't forget to put the plan up this time around! This week we're going to be covering a couple of basic leg locks, and more importantly, leg lock defense. As most of you know, white belts are not allowed to use leg locks during sparring (in our school). Blue Belts can do straight ankle locks and straight knee bars, but no twisting locks. We'll be covering a couple of the straight leg locks and their counters this week, I hope you guys enjoy them!

Techniques/Drills:

  • Straight ankle lock and counter (achilles lock)

1/16/07 Lesson Plan

Team,

I'm sorry for getting the lesson plan up late. I got all caught up in tracking this crazy weather we've been having and completely forgot to post the plan. This week we'll be covering a couple of different guard passes. Well, as they say, better late than never!

Techniques/Drills:

  • Closed guard pass (arm under back)
  • Half guard pass (bearhug pass)

These are two very high percentage passes which combine both opening the legs and passing into one nearly seemless motion. I hope you guys enjoy them!

1/9/07 Lesson Plan

Wow,

I Almost forgot to put the lesson plan together! This week we will be focusing on the Butterfly Guard. The Butterfly guard is a very versatile form of the open guard which can be used to set up many sweeps, submissions, and transitions.

Techniques/Drills:

  • Basic hook sweep
  • Basic hook sweep variation

We may add a few more variations depending on how much we get done this week!
